Hole in an iron washer

What happens to the hole in an iron washer when the washer is heated? Does the size of the hole decrease, increase, or stay the same?

Solution: When a piece of metal is heated or cooled, it expands or contracts uniformly. The effect is just the same as if the whole thing were scaled up or scaled down. The iron washer would expand when heated, as would the hole in it.

Answer: The hole gets larger.
